Summary
ArcticNet’s 12th Annual Scientific Meeting was a huge success with over 750 participants, inclusive of leading Arctic researchers, graduate students, northern community representatives, and government and industry partners. From December 5 to 9 2016, Canada’s top Arctic scientists gathered at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg to address the numerous environmental, social, economical and political challenges and opportunities that are emerging from climate change and modernization in the Arctic.
More than 280 oral presentations and 200 scientific posters from all fields of Arctic research were presented during the meeting, reflecting the tremendous, multidisciplinary research effort supported by the Network and its partners.
As evidence of a promising future for Canadian Arctic research, over 300 graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and researchers attended the eleventh ArcticNet Student Day, with 10 students awarded prizes for the excellence of their posters and research.
ArcticNet was pleased to welcome The W. Garfield Weston Foundation to present the annual Weston Family Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Northern Research to Dr. John England during the conference. In addition, the Inuit Recognition Award was presented to Inez Shiwak for her contribution to Arctic research and the APECS Canada-ASA Mentor Award was presented to Joel McAlister, acknowledging his dedication to early career polar researchers.
Also highly anticipated, the fifth annual Arctic Inspiration Prize Award Ceremony at the Winnipeg Centennial Concert Hall featured a performance of Vincent Ho’s Arctic Symphony by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with the Nunavut Sivuniksavut students. In the presence of His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, the co-hosts Clara Hughes and Andrea Brazeau highlighted the creative and inspirational knowledge to action plans that are helping to transform life in Canada’s North.
The ArcticNet Board of Directors, Research Management Committee and Administrative Centre would like to thank all the participants, sponsors, partners and exhibitors for their contribution in making the ASM2016 such a great success.
